Private hernia surgery in Vienna: costs and procedure
A planned hernia operation should be well prepared, both medically and organisationally. In addition to the appropriate surgical method, we discuss the private hospital, the date, aftercare and the clarification of costs.
I operate in Viennese private hospitals. Treatment is possible both with appropriate private (supplementary) health insurance and for self-pay patients.

What makes up the costs of hernia surgery?
The total costs depend on the findings, the surgical procedure and the required hospital stay. In particular, they include:
- The surgeon's fee.
- The anaesthesia services.
- The hospital and operating theatre costs.
Before the operation, we clarify which services are included and which costs, if any, you will have to bear yourself.
Surgery with private health insurance
With appropriate private (supplementary) health insurance, the costs of an operation in a private hospital may be covered, depending on your policy. The decisive factors are the scope of your insurance, any deductibles and a confirmation of cover, if required.
Cost coverage should be clarified before the operation so that you know whether you will have to pay a share yourself.
Surgery as a self-pay patient
Private hernia surgery is also possible without appropriate private health insurance. After the examination and once the planned procedure has been determined, an individual cost estimate can be prepared.
This takes into account the medical services and the costs of the private hospital. This gives you an overview of the expected total costs before you make your decision.
How do I arrange a date for surgery?
First, you book a consultation at my practice. I examine you personally and discuss the appropriate surgical procedure with you.
Surgery dates are usually available at short notice, within a few days to a few weeks. We agree on the timing together, based on your findings, your symptoms and your private and professional plans.
What should I bring to the first consultation?
It is helpful to bring any existing findings, an up-to-date list of your medication and, if you have had previous abdominal or hernia operations, the corresponding surgical reports. If imaging is already available, please bring it with you as well.
An ultrasound examination before your appointment is not necessary. If required, I can carry it out myself in the practice.
Which preliminary examinations are necessary?
The necessary examinations depend on the planned operation, your age and any accompanying conditions. After the consultation, you will receive information about which findings are needed for the operation and the anaesthesia.
We also agree before the operation on how to handle the medication you take regularly. You should not stop taking any medication on your own.
What happens on the day of surgery?
Before the operation, you receive detailed information on admission to the private hospital, fasting times and the planned procedure. The anaesthesia team discusses the anaesthesia with you.
After the operation, your well-being, pain management and mobility are assessed. When you can leave the hospital depends on the extent of the operation and how you are progressing.
How is aftercare organised?
Before discharge, you receive advice on wound care, movement and physical strain. At the follow-up check, I assess wound healing and remove the skin sutures.
Even after the treatment has been completed and the follow-up check has taken place, I remain personally available for your questions.
