PUMP method: umbilical hernia surgery through a small incision
The PUMP method – preperitoneal umbilical mesh plasty – combines a small direct access with mesh reinforcement of the abdominal wall. For umbilical hernias that require mesh repair, it is my preferred method.
The mesh is placed between the peritoneum and the abdominal wall. The hernia opening is then additionally closed with sutures. Laparoscopy or robotic assistance is not necessary for this.

Why I prefer the PUMP method
For an umbilical hernia, a small direct access is in most cases the gentlest solution. The hernia site lies directly beneath the navel and can therefore be reached in a targeted way.
Through this access, I can repair the hernia and insert the mesh. Additional puncture sites for a camera and other instruments are not necessary. In my view, laparoscopic or robotic surgery therefore often offers no decisive additional benefit for a limited umbilical hernia.
How does PUMP surgery work?
Through a small incision in the fold of the navel, I expose the hernia and push the hernia contents back. I then prepare the space for the mesh between the peritoneum and the abdominal wall.
The mesh is placed so that it sufficiently overlaps the hernia gap and reinforces the surrounding abdominal wall. The peritoneum separates it from the intestine and the other internal organs.
I then additionally close the hernia opening with sutures. Finally, the skin wound is sutured and covered with a shower-proof dressing.
What are the risks of PUMP surgery?
When the operation is performed carefully, serious complications are rare. During the healing phase, mild wound pain, bruising and swelling may occur in the area of the navel. Wound fluid can temporarily collect in the wound cavity under the skin (seroma). These side effects usually subside by themselves.
Impaired wound healing, infections, persistent discomfort or a recurrence are rare possible complications. Rarely, mesh-related problems can occur. I inform you personally about your individual risks before the operation.
After PUMP surgery
Most patients can leave the hospital a few hours after the operation or at the latest on the day after the operation. Walking and light everyday activity are usually possible – and indeed desirable – just a few hours after the operation.
If healing is uncomplicated, light sporting activities such as jogging, swimming and cycling are possible again after about two weeks. A prerequisite for swimming is a completely healed wound. More strenuous physical activity can usually be resumed after about four to six weeks.
At the follow-up check, I assess wound healing and remove the skin sutures. Even after the treatment has been completed, I remain personally available for your questions.
