Robotic hernia surgery in Vienna: when does it make sense?
Robotic surgery extends the possibilities for selected complex hernia operations. It can be particularly helpful when an extensive reconstruction of the abdominal wall is required.
The decisive question is whether robotic assistance offers a concrete benefit for your findings. For many hernias, an equally suitable repair can be achieved with a small direct access or a laparoscopic operation.

How does robotic hernia surgery work?
A surgical robot does not carry out any surgical steps on its own. I control the camera and the instruments from a console and supervise the entire operation.
The system offers a magnified three-dimensional view and articulated instruments. These can make dissection and suturing easier in areas that are difficult to access.
For which findings do I use robotics?
Robotic assistance is an option in particular for selected complex incisional hernias and abdominal wall reconstructions. It can help to expose the required tissue layers carefully, suture hernia gaps and place a mesh outside the abdominal cavity.
Whether this approach makes sense depends, among other things, on the location and size of the defect, previous operations and any existing meshes.
Why don't I operate on every hernia robotically?
More technology does not automatically mean greater benefit for the patient.
Laparoscopic TAPP is a well-suited procedure for most inguinal hernias. For many umbilical hernias, the PUMP method allows mesh repair through a small direct incision. For such findings, additional robotic assistance often offers no decisive advantage.
Even for complex hernias, open surgery can be the more sensible solution. I discuss with you which procedure I recommend and what contribution robotics can make.
What are the limitations and risks?
Bleeding, infections, injuries to organs or persistent discomfort can also occur with robotic surgery. A recurrence is also possible. The individual risk depends above all on the findings, previous operations and the extent of the reconstruction.
Pronounced adhesions or unfavourable tissue conditions can make it necessary to switch to a different surgical procedure. Robotic assistance replaces neither the surgeon's experience nor the careful choice of method.
Frequently asked questions about robotic hernia surgery
Does the robot operate independently?
No. I control all movements and perform all surgical steps myself. The system transfers my movements to the instruments.
Is a different mesh used in robotic surgery?
The choice of mesh depends on the repair required and the planned mesh position. The use of a robot alone does not determine which mesh is used.
Will I recover faster after robotic surgery?
This cannot be said in general terms. What matters most for recovery is how extensive the actual reconstruction is. A complex robotic abdominal wall reconstruction can require a longer recovery period than a small open repair.
Are there additional costs?
That depends on the planned operation, the private hospital and your insurance cover. The costs and any required confirmation of cover are clarified before the operation.
